Rebeca Tomás

Based in Manhattan, Rebeca is one of New York City’s up and coming Flamenco artists, freelancing as a solo dancer and company performer, and producing her own original works.  She has been deemed by the critics as “delightful” (New York Times), “masterful” (Eva YaaAsentawaa), “a fierce performer” (Explore Dance), and “a postcard image of the feminine Flamenco dancer” (Kansas City Metropolis).  From summer 2008 through winter 2009, she danced with the internationally renowned company Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca in numerous tours and productions.  She has also performed with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, Jorge Navarro’s Pasión Flamenca, and Oscar Valero Flamenco Company.

Rebeca began her formal dance training in Granada, Spain at Maite Galán’s Escuela de Danza Española.  She later moved to Madrid, where she studied at the internationally renowned Flamenco Academy Amor de Dios under such figures as Maria Magdalena, La China, Manuel Liñán, and Rafaela Carrasco.  There she appeared at various tablaos, including Al Andalus and Las Carboneras.  She has also studied in Sevilla with Juana Amaya, Pastora Galván, and Yolanda Heredia. She is a two-time recipient of the Jerome Foundation's Travel and Study Grant (2008 and 2010), as well as a scholarship recipient of the school at Jacob's Pillow (2008).  This past June, 2010, she won first place in the XIII Concurso Nacional de Flamenco, part of the internationally renowned Festival Flamenco in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In May, 2010, Rebeca presented an original production, entitled A Palo Seco, which she directed, choreographed, and danced in, featuring a cast of the top musicians and dancers in New York City.  Presented at Theater 80 Saint Marks, A Palo Seco ran a full weekend of completely sold-out shows and was hailed as “a feast for the eyes and the ears” by Lindsay Miller (Theater On-Line). She is presently working as an assistant choreographer for the Lincoln Center production of "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown."
